We saw during the BP oil spill that many volunteers were turned away because the leaders felt that without the proper training, they couldn't help. The volunteers felt helpless and frustrated. They left with little hope for a good outcome. This happens all the time in organizations. Leaders don't ask for help. Employees stand frustrated on the sidelines. They eventually lose hope and their ability to be fully productive. How can we turn this around? This article gives some ideas.
